Tips for Back to School Clothes Shopping on a Budget
And just like that another fun summer break has come and gone and it’s officially time for back to school! I honestly can’t believe it’s already August and of course I’m in disbelief that my boys are starting 1st and 3rd grade. We had such a good summer break and I’ll definitely miss having them around the house, but I think we’re both a little ready to get back to the normal school routine.
Growing up, back to school clothes shopping was always my favorite (what can I say, I’ve always loved shopping), but as a parent I realize how stressful it can be to try to stay on budget. Plus it can always be a challenge to find items that your kids will love and to find clothes that will last all season long.
That’s why today I’m super excited to have partnered with Bealls Outlet in sharing helpful tips for back to school clothes shopping on a budget. Plus – I’m sharing the cute and affordable outfits and backpacks that we scored at Bealls that my boys will be rocking on their first day of school!

Tips for Back to School Clothes Shopping on a Budget
With a little smart planning, back to school shopping doesn’t have to be stressful and staying on budget is 100% possible. For me, I prefer getting all my back to school clothes shopping done in one store, which is why our go-to store is Bealls Outlet.
Bealls Outlet offers designer name brands at up to 70% off what you’d pay in other stores, with new arrivals every week! I’ve been shopping both Bealls Outlet and Burkes Outlet for years now and absolutely love that I can find cute and affordable clothes for the whole family, plus other back to school item essentials like backpacks, lunch boxes, and water thermoses.
Even my kids and husband love shopping at Bealls Outlet, because they always find something they love. In addition to clothes and shoes, they also have tons of cute home items, kitchen items, toys, pet items, luggage and purses, and electronics- all at super low prices.
If you’ve never shopped at Bealls Outlet or Burkes Outlet, you’re totally missing out! Head here to shop their online selection and find a store location near you.
Shopping Tips For Back to School Clothes on a Budget
Evaluate Your Kid’s Closet & Make a Back to School Shopping List
Before heading shopping, you’ll first want to evaluate your children’s closets and determine what items they’ll need for the fall back to school season ahead. If you’re uncertain of sizing, have each child try on their clothes to ensure they still fit properly. Plus this will give you a better idea of what size clothes to buy for the next seasons ahead.
Once you have an idea of what items they can still wear, make a list of any missing clothing items and notate how many they will need. Don’t forget to include other important wardrobe necessities like shoes, socks, and underwear.
Set a Back to School Clothes Budget for Each Child
Now that you have a list made, you’ll want to set a back to school clothing budget for each child. I find it helpful to actually write it down on my list, and if you struggle with staying on budget when using a debit card, it might be best to use cash or to load an in-store gift card with a set amount.
A lot of people will set an overall back to school shopping budget, but I’ve always liked creating a separate budget for both back to school clothes and back to school supplies. It’s completely personal preference, so do whichever works best for your family.
Shop at a Non-Busy Time
If you’re wondering when is the best time to back to school shop, then you’ll want to shop early in the season and if at all possible, avoid shopping during busy hours or on peak days like Saturday. You’ll want to be able to take your time shopping to ensure you’re not forgetting anything, so aim for a week day, evening, or early mornings on the weekends.
My personal favorite time to shop at Bealls Outlet is Friday mornings! It’s less crowded and because I’m a One Card Loyalty member I save an additional 15% on my entire purchase, plus I earn reward points for every $1 spent that I can use on future purchases.
Let Them Help Pick Out Their Clothes & Backpacks
To make shopping a little more fun for your kids, let them help pick out their school clothes, backpack, and other back to school essentials. This will help ensure your kids absolutely love their items, which means they’ll get more wear out of them.
Although my boys aren’t big shoppers, they love it when they can select items with their favorite characters on it and they’re both now at the age where they have their own unique style preferences.
My boys had a blast picking out and trying on backpacks in our local Bealls Outlet store.
Take Advantage of Extra Savings
To make the absolute most of your back to school shopping, be sure and take advantage of extra savings in-store. Check out clearance racks for even more savings and don’t forget to use coupons if you have them.
Bealls Outlet offers an amazing (and totally free) One Card Loyalty Program where the more you shop, the more you earn! With the One Card, you earn reward points with every purchase, and once you reach 200 points you get $5 off your purchase. You can also save an additional 15% off every Friday if you’re 49 and under, and 15% off every Monday if you’re over 50!
For even more savings, you can also get a Bealls Outlet credit card, which gives you double reward points for every purchase, in addition to all the other perks of a One Card. Head here to check out all the details on how to apply.
Our Affordable Back to School Picks
Here’s a look at some of the clothing items and deals we scored for back to school. I was able to get each of the boys 3 shirts, 2 bottoms, a pair of sneakers, and a backpack for less than $120 total after my 15% off Friday discount. Talk about an amazing deal on name brand items that I’d pay a lot more for at other stores!
Cute First Day of School Outfits
Onto the actual outfits- I always like to dress the boys in something cute and casual on the first day of school, and I just love the items we were able to find at Bealls Outlet. They have such a great selection of boys clothes!
In addition to their back to school outfits, I managed to find a super pretty blue blouse and the cutest block heel sandals. (Because Moms should look good on the first day of school too!)
First Day of School Outfit for 3rd Grade– Red & Navy Blue Polo, Khaki Cargo Shorts, and Gray & Red Sneakers
First Day of School Outfit for 1st Grade – Navy Raglan Bear Print Tee, Khaki Cargo Shorts, Gray and Black Sneakers

Me too- it was always so much fun picking out clothes for the year (I guess it’s a girl thing haha). And yep- it is very similar to TJ Maxx and Marshalls with a little difference in brand selection and they’re a little less expensive. Thank-you!

Thank-you! Before moving to GA we had Burkes Outlet and I LOVED it, so I was excited to find a Bealls here which is the same store just under a different name. I especially love shopping their shoe section! 😉

Now, it’s not so much for clothes because college is on such a grander scale, it’s dorm and apartment decorating. The boys and you look darling and I sure hope they have the BEST year and great teachers!
