10 Easy Laundry Hacks
Oh the joys of laundry. It’s the one household chore that most of us busy moms dread doing and the one task we all try to put off until the very last minute.
But over the years I’ve gathered quite a few simple tricks to make doing laundry less time consuming, less expensive, and have even found ways to make doing laundry less stressful. Let’s dive right into my 10 Easy Laundry Hacks below!

Laundry Hack #1 – Wash Clothes Less
One of my favorite laundry hacks is simply to wash clothes less. Now of course some items need to be washed after each use, such as t-shirts, undergarments, and washcloths; however, items like jeans, pajamas, and towels do not need to be washed everyday, unless of course you spill something on them. Washing items frequently will quickly cause the clothes to fade, become dingy, and cause it to lose its softness, which I think we all can agree is not the overall goal.
Helpful Laundry Tip: Hang towels up to dry after every use to get a week’s worth of use out of them. Place pajamas at the end of your bed or under your pillow for use the following night.
Laundry Hack #2 – Sort As You Go
I don’t know about you but one of the reasons I used to always dread folding clothes is because I disliked having to sort through mounds of clothes just to find that one shirt. My second favorite laundry hack? Sort your clothes BEFORE putting them in the washer/dryer.
To keep clothes at their optimal quality, items should be sorted according to fabric, weight, and color. This is as simple as investing in 3-4 stackable laundry baskets and labeling them with lights, colors, towels, and delicates and sorting accordingly. If you have the room, you can place all the baskets in your laundry room, but if not I find putting a basket with carrying handles right near the door in each bedroom helps keep things organized.
The small effort of sorting items prior to washing will save you a huge headache later and I’ve found it helps motivate me to fold items more quickly, since everything is already sorted for putting away.
Helpful Laundry Tip: Invest in laundry baskets/hampers with easy carry handles that make carrying clothes from bedrooms to the laundry room a breeze.
Laundry Hack #3 – Hang A Laundry Bag For Socks
Tired of losing socks all the time? This laundry hack will save you headaches and extra $$$ simply by investing in a mesh laundry bag and conveniently hanging it in your laundry room for everyone to drop in their socks. Previously anytime we’d wash clothes, socks would somehow mysteriously disappear in the washer/dryer, which of course would result in me having to go out and buy more socks.
With separating the socks in its own laundry bag, I now never have to waste extra time and energy searching for lost socks, plus it saves money! I know this adds another step to pre-sorting your clothes, but trust me it is a such a life changer for families who have lots of little socks floating around.
Helpful Laundry Tip: For additional organization, purchase this set of multiple mesh laundry bags so each family member can have one for their delicates.
Laundry Hack #4 – Use Quick Wash Option
This simple laundry hack has saved me SO much time and will absolutely change the way you wash clothes! Save on time and your energy/water bill and start using the quick wash setting for washing regular loads of laundry. Most washers today have a quick wash option that is perfect for busy days when you don’t have a lot of time for waiting on 2 hour long loads to get done. And to be honest the quick wash setting is all you really need for washing everyday items that aren’t heavily soiled.
Speaking of saving money, if you haven’t yet tried out Member’s Mark Ultimate Clean Liquid Laundry Detergent sold exclusively in Sam’s Club stores and at samsclub.com, then you’re definitely missing out! Laundry Hack #5 – Write Notes On a Chalkboard
The next laundry room hack is a lifesaver if you have multiple people doing laundry in the home. One of the things that has caused me the largest headache with laundry over the years is having something delicate accidentally dried or having sweaters shrink up because they shouldn’t have been put in the dryer. That’s where having a chalkboard or dry erase board in your laundry room really comes in handy!
To avoid mishaps, simply leave a note or special instruction on your chalkboard! This simple hack helps remind anyone else who might be doing the laundry to double check the loads for items that require special drying instructions. Alternatively, put cute quotes or special messages to brighten up your laundry space. Hey, if you’re going to be spending so much time in there, might as well make it a cute space, right?
Laundry Hack #6 – Use Vinegar to Clean and Soften
All-natural white vinegar has so many amazing uses around the house but when it comes to laundry, it really can work some magic! If your towels have seen better days, try adding in a cup of white distilled vinegar and running on a hot cycle to bring them back to life. If your towels have a musty odor, you can also add in baking soda before running the cycle. This laundry hack will make your towels look and feel brand new again and is such a simple solution instead of running out and buying new towels.
Helpful Laundry Tip: You can also use the vinegar/baking soda trick to clean your washer. Simply sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of your washer, pour in a cup of vinegar, and run a quick rinse cycle to remove any odors!
Laundry Hack #7 – Cut Dryer Sheets in Half
My mom taught me this awesome laundry hack years ago, and it’s such a great tip I had to share! Dryer sheets are wonderful for making your towels and clothes smell amazing, but depending on how many loads of clothes you use a week, the cost of dryer sheets can quickly add up.
To get extended use out of them, simply cut your dryer sheets in half using a pair of scissors and toss in a half sheet in each load. Your clothes will still smell amazing and your wallet will totally thank you for it!
Helpful Laundry Tip: Store your dryer sheets in a large ziplock bag to keep them fresher longer.
Laundry Hack #8 – Iron With Your Dryer
I truly believe there are two types of people in the world- those who iron and those who find any and all alternative methods to avoid ironing. I am the latter! (haha) but really, I discovered this laundry hack when I was on vacation and one of my blouses needed a little help in the de-wrinkling department.
Simply dampen a washcloth or lightweight t-shirt and place in the dryer with the item(s) that need to be de-wrinkled. After the cycle completes, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find your item is wrinkle free and ready for wearing! I also love using this de-wrinkling spray for more stubborn wrinkles (and it smells amazing!).
Helpful Laundry Tip: If you’re traveling and don’t have access to a dryer, you can use a blow dryer on the lowest setting to steam out any wrinkles in a blouse or dress.
Laundry Hack #9 – Don’t Fold All of Your Clothes
I just recently started implementing this laundry tip and it has been seriously life changing. I used to waste SO much time folding items that didn’t really need to be folded, such as underwear, wash cloths, and bras. While I’m a very organized person, I found this task unnecessary and I now prefer to simply stack/lay the items flat in the drawer that I’m putting them in.
Helpful Laundry Tip: If you have the closet space, hang t-shirts in your closet rather than folding them in a drawer. Not only will this save you time but it also helps keep wrinkles in your tees at bay.
Laundry Hack #10 – Make Folding A Family Affair
Last but not least, as wives and mothers I think it can sometimes be difficult to accept and ask for help, but laundry shouldn’t be a one person job. Since folding and putting away laundry typically takes up the most time, make it a family affair and ask all the family members to pitch in and help. Bring the baskets in the living room and turn on a movie or music to make it fun for everyone! This laundry tip will help make the process so much quicker and it really helps instill responsibility by letting others help out.
Helpful Laundry Tip: Resist the urge to correct or re-fold items folded by other family members. Even if it isn’t the way you would fold it, they took out the time to help and should be thanked for doing so. Remember, in the end it’s just laundry and it doesn’t have to perfect. 🙂
Organizational Tips For The Laundry Room
In addition to the 10 Easy Laundry Hacks I shared above, I have also found having a clean, organized laundry room really helps make doing laundry more enjoyable. Here’s 5 quick laundry room hacks for keeping your space clean, organized, and looking great!
- Keep laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and other items in a nearby cabinet
- Keep a small trash can right next to the dryer for easy cleaning of the lint trap
- Use hanging hooks to organize cleaning items, an ironing board, and for hanging up clothes to avoid wrinkles
- Keep a small organizing tray or container on top of your washer/dryer for storing of loose items such as coins, keys, or papers that might be found in jean pockets
- Always keep a laundry basket nearby for easy carrying of clean clothes

I REALLY need to invest in a laundry bag for socks and underwear!!! And I need to wash my clothes less, that’s for sure. I feel like we always have SO MUCH laundry, and it’s only the two of us! I can’t imagine when we have kids! My husband builds cabinets and is an EMT for a living so he always needs laundry, his clothes are always filthy after work! ugh
Yes, you should! They’re like less than $2, I think, at Walmart or on Amazon, and they help save so much time! And I definitely understand, my husband’s the same way!
These are all super awesome tips! Leaving notes is always helpful! I’m not sure if it’s just our washer/dryer or all of them but dry erase markers work perfectly on our washing machine so my boyfriend and I leave our notes directly on the machine and just wipe it off for the next load.
Yes! That’s a great tip too! Ours are too dark for that to really work, but it’d definitely be great for lighter colored washers/dryers. 🙂
I love all of these tips! The printable is appreciated, too! [client]
Thanks Emily! Glad it was helpful to you! 🙂
These are such great tips! I definitely need to do the sock one because I am always losing my socks!
Thank-you! You can find them really cheap at Walmart or on Amazon and they’re well worth it!
I love these tips! Especially the chalkboard one–my husband has dried my Lululemon so many times I could cry!
Yes my husband is really bad for that too! Thanks!
My favorite laundry hack for wearing clothes more than once and get out wrinkles (mostly while traveling, but also at home) is to put a dryer sheet in a spray bottle, add water, and lightly mist clothes the night before. Then hang them to dry and they will be fresh and wrinkle free the next day! I hate wearing clothes more than once, but this trick helps me feel fresh 🙂
Ahh, that’s genius Amanda! Thanks for sharing! Will definitely give that a try soon. 🙂
I did not know that vinegar hack – so cool! My mantra is “buy more clothes, launder less” HAHAHA
Yes! You’ll love how it makes towels softer!
I love these tips! I always try to cut my dryer sheets in half if I use them. I also like using a tennis ball in the dryer when I’m drying pillows or towels to keep them fluffy and help them dry faster. Thanks for sharing!
Great tip, Lecy! I’ll have to try that!
Great tips! They all seem so easy and practical! I am definitely putting these into practice. Here’s to hoping that 2018 brings better laundry habits for my home!!
Thank-you! Happy New Year, Monica!
Great tips, sadly both my washer and dryer died out on me so I am trying to do my research so I can invest in a pair that are built to last. I have always sorted my clothes before laundry day I thought that was the way it was supposed to be done.
Oh no! Hope you’re able to find one soon! We have samsung front-loaders and love them!
I love all of these tips! Sounds funny to say, but can’t wait to do laundry and implement a few! Love the vinegar and baking soda hacks, and the sock hack!
Thanks! Haha, you’ll love using vinegar on your towels! It makes them SO soft!
These are really great tips. We already do a lot of these, like washing pyjamas and towels less often. And we’ve been using vinegar in the wash for years. I haven’t tried the baking soda trick, though. I will keep it in mind for the next time one of the kids forgets wet swim gear in their backpack!
Thank-you! That’s great, Kyla! You’ll love the baking soda trick! Takes any odor right out!
These are great laundry tips! I especially like the one about washing garments less. They tend to last longer.

Absolutely! And unless you’re rolling around in the mud like my kids like to do, it doesn’t need it! 😉 haha
If we did each other’s laundry, notes would definitely be needed! Love the chalkboard idea.
My husband is SO bad for just putting everything in the dryer and I have a ton of do not dry shirts, so it’s really helped with that!
Great tips! I bought three smaller laundry baskets to sort as I go and that has helped a lot. I hate ironing so I need to try that trick, and see if I have a quick wash option! Laundry feels like it takes over my life sometimes.
It really does help to sort as you go! And yep quick wash is so helpful on days where you’re in a rush and don’t feel like waiting forever. Plus it uses less water and energy = win-win!
I have a basket for socks but like the idea of the bag
YEs- they’re super inexpensive on Amazon or at Walmart and save a ton of hassle.
These are fantastic tips. Laundry is my least favorite chore but these may make it a little less painful.
Thank-you! I’m not sure I’ve ever met anyone that actually likes laundry haha
Laundry is such a tough chore for me but I love these tips you shared! Sorting as you go would make things a lot easier on us and I love the idea of doing socks separately! I hope you have a wonderful New Year, Cara!! Sierra~Beautifully Candid
Same here- it’s my least favorite chore, but I try to stay on top of it to avoid getting overwhelmed. Happy New Year, friend!
I’m totally going to have to get a laundry bag for socks — it’s crazy how many single socks I find!!
Yes! They’re super cheap and will save you a ton of hassle!
Putting socks in a mesh bag is such a brilliant idea! I’m tired of my washer/dryer seemingly “eating” mine, haha.
It will save you so much time and headache in losing socks lol! Cause I still believe the washer/dryer eats them. 😉
Great blog. I read this to your mommy. Love you
Thanks, love you too!
I look forward to the day that I have walls and can say I actually have a laundry room. haha! Great tips.
🙂 gwingal
Haha aw, you’ll get there! Thanks so much!
These are such great tips! I LOVE the chalkboard idea because my husband will often be the one transferring everything from the washer and dryer and he forgets to leave certain pieces out! Lol and seriously, how do so many socks disappear?!
Thank-you! Yep- that’s exactly why I invested in a chalkboard. I have so many do not dry items, so it definitely comes in handy.
These are perfect tips. I have to say, laundry is the chore that I hate the most. I always feel myself procrastinating and restarting the dryer 8-9 times. I really love the chalkboard idea! If I am really really procrastinating, the hubby will jump in but he puts everything in the wash and everything in the dryer so I have had a few ruined items-I guess that is what I get for not doing it haha! Happy Friday!
Thanks! It’s for sure my least favorite chore haha but these tips help make it less dreadful. And yes the chalkboard has helped prevent my husband from ruining shirts/dresses lol. He’s so bad about just throwing everything in the dryer.
I never even thought about cutting the dryer sheets in half. That’s genius, actually. I’m a non-ironer… so I’ll definitely have to dry the damp cloth idea. I’m also the world’s worst at getting things out of the dryer and putting them away. lol.
There’s almost always a little scent left to my dryer sheets- even cut in half! Definitely helps get more bang for your buck!
I love these tips! I’m terrible about washing pajamas after every wear. Adding vinegar in with my towels is a must, too! I love how fresh and fluffy they stay by adding in vinegar to the wash. I also do not understand folding undergarments. It’s just something I’ve never done, even though I’m very particular about my drawer organization. Great post, Cara!
Thanks Erin! It’s amazing how vinegar really does soften towels right up!
