Recipes Using Self Rising Flour FAQ’s
What is Self Rising Flour?
Self-rising flour is just as the name says: it’s self-rising.
It’s made with a blended flour mixture comprised of all-purpose flour, baking powder, and a small amount of fine salt.
Since it is premixed with a leavening agent, it is a convenient solution for making many types of baked goods.
Although I’ve used just about every brand under the sun, my absolute favorite is this self-rising flour.
It creates the absolute BEST biscuits, cookies, and cakes.
Can You Use Self-Rising Flour Just Like Regular Flour?
It depends on the recipe.
Before baking, it’s always important to consider which type of flour your recipe calls for and other ingredients the recipes might use.
Fortunately for you, I have created a ton of delicious and easy self rising flour recipes that are tried and true!
What Happens If I Use Self Rising Instead of All-Purpose Flour?
As mentioned above, it’s important to always be mindful of the specific type of flour a recipe calls for.
If it’s a simple cookie recipe that uses only all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt – it should be fine to substitute self-rising flour.
However, in the case of recipes that call for all-purpose flour and additional leavening agents such as baking soda and buttermilk, I would not recommend substituting self-rising flour.
Using self-rising flour in a recipe like that, will result in too much rise with the final product, and can alter the texture, taste, and structural integrity.
Can You Make Self Rising Flour?
Yes! Self rising flour is simple to make at home.

What Can You Do With Old Self-Rising Flour?
Self-Rising Flour has a surprisingly short shelf life in comparison to All Purpose Flour, and typically only lasts about 6 months.
In the case of old self rising flour or flour that’s on the verge of expiration, you can sometimes add an extra ½ tsp of baking powder to your dough, and it will turn out fine.
That said, if you are unsure of how old your flour is, I recommend buying a new bag of fresh flour – for the best taste and rising results.

What Recipes Can You Make with Self Rising Flour?
It’s ideal in quick-rising recipes that don’t require yeast such as biscuits, cookies, pancakes, waffles, muffins, and quick breads.
Self rising flour is also great for cobblers, fried hand pies, pizza dough, and certain cakes/cupcakes.
