Beginner Makeup Brush Guide (The Brushes You Need)

Happy Monday, friends! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I’m excited to share that I’ve been working behind the scenes on several new series that I’ll be revealing over the next few weeks. First up, today I’m sharing the Ultimate Beginner Makeup Brush Guide where I’m talking all about how to use makeup brushes and the best makeup brushes around.

Announcing A New Beauty Series

As a beauty blogger and makeup lover I get asked so many beauty questions on a regular basis, so today’s post is the mark of a new beauty series: Ask Cara. Each month I’ll be featuring a new popular topic that you (the reader) gets to pick!

First up in the series is one of the most asked about beauty topic around – makeup brushes! I get asked all the time “Which makeup brushes do I REALLY need?” , “What makeup brushes are used for what?”, and most frequently “Which makeup brushes do you recommend?” so without further adieu, I’ve created a super helpful makeup brushes guide that helps address how to use makeup brushes, must have makeup brushes and their names, and more!Check out my beginner makeup brush guide with a beginner's guide to makeup brushes, different types of makeup brushes and how to use them. Ultimate Makeup Brush Guide + How to Use Them

When I first started out using makeup, like most beginners I had absolutely zero clue what makeup brushes I actually needed to have in my collection or what makeup brushes are used for what. To be honest, for the longest time I didn’t even own makeup brushes and I only used the little applicators that came in eyeshadow palettes. (I know, I know I’m cringing too)

But eventually I realized that the key difference between okay looking makeup and great looking makeup stemmed down to one thing- makeup brushes. Seriously if you were to look at my beginning eyeshadow looks vs some of my most recent ones, you would be able to clearly notice what a difference the application makes and how makeup brushes play a huge part in that. (Well that and blending, but that’s a whole other topic for another day 😉 )

Which Makeup Brushes Do I Really Need?

To be honest, the number of makeup brushes needed in your collection differs for everyone and ultimately depends on the type of makeup looks you wear and what you’re looking to achieve. To make it easy, I’ve included a helpful makeup brush buying guide below that will help you determine which makeup brush types will work best for you, depending on your makeup skill level. This is you if…

You don’t wear a ton of makeup on a regular basis and your go-to look is a little bit of foundation, blush, mascara, and some lip balm. To be honest, you’re probably one who’s all about the “no-makeup” makeup look, so why not invest in a few key makeup brushes to help you achieve a flawless, gorgeous finish?

Although you might be a fan of using your fingers to apply makeup, using makeup brushes will give you a more even finish and can even help speed up your makeup routine. 🙂

  5. I love the e.l.f. and wet n’ wild brushes for the cheaper end brushes but I definitely need to upgrade some of my other “no name” brushes to nicer ones. I’ve wanted to try the sonia kashuk ones as I’ve heard they are good so this guide was definitely useful! Great post lady, hope you have a wonderful week ahead! XO -Kim

    1. The key to applying foundation with a makeup brush is applying it in circular motions for blending it out well. I always start in the center of my face and work outwards too. I tend to use my sponge more frequently but depending on the type of foundation, it sometimes applies easier with a brush. Hope that helps! 🙂

  6. Amazing round up! I love that you included so many E.L.F. brushes which are surprisingly some of my favs too. And I love my fan brush for highlighter, it’s the perfect finishing touch <3

  7. Cara- what a FUN series! I love this idea. I don’t have any Morphe brushes and may need to pick up one based on your recommendations! I’m going to think of a question to submit now. Great post girl!

    1. Thanks so much! I truly love morphe brushes- they’re so fluffy, soft, and they work amazing at blending out eyeshadow. Gotta thank my girl Jaclyn Hill for recommending them years ago. 😉

  8. This is SUUUUUCH a good, comprehensive guide – SO so helpful! Now to go through my brush collection…

  10. this is SO helpful cara!! I’m definitely a beginner and own 2 brushes haha a flat one to squish my concealer and a fluffy one to put on powdery stuff haha

  11. I love playing with makeup and trying new brushes! My favorites have got to be the Real Techniques brushes. They are amazing and at a great price!

  12. I’m excited for the new series! I also LOVE a lot of these same brushes. Anything by It Cosmetics has always been a win for me–their brushes are SO soft. I love the Real Techniques sponges, too!

  13. This was such an in depth post! Being a makeup enthusiast I have every brush under the sun! I personally feel like you can never have too many brushes as they break , fall apart, and get rough overtime. Morphe, Luxie, Ecotools, and Sigma are some of my favorites!

  14. Confession.. I think I’ve had my makeup brushes for like seven years.. so time to invest in new ones! Thanks for all the tips!

    1. It happens to us all. We don’t even realize how long we hold onto products sometimes, but it’s good to invest in new ones every so often. 🙂

  15. Real Techniques makes a few of my favorite brushes too! I love their beauty blender, so much more affordable than the $20 one with the same finishing results. I have an IT eye shadow brush that is another favorite of mine. And I really like Sigma brushes too.

    1. Couldn’t agree more! I mean the regular beauty blender is fine but honestly I don’t see it being any better than the RT one.

  16. This is the best guide to makeup brushes! Thanks for the reminder that I need to get a fan brush. 🙂 I also need to upgrade a couple of my Sigma blending brushes, so I’ll have to check out Morphe!

    1. Thank-you! I love my morphe brushes- been using them for years as recommended by Jaclyn Hill 🙂 lol Plus they have them at Ulta now so they’re a lot easier to buy!

  17. I love how you have mostly budget-friendly options on here. I have had a blush brush from elf that I’ve used every day for years! They’re great quality!

    1. Honestly they work just as well if not better than some of the higher end options. I’m a huge fan of elf too!

  18. Yay! So excited for your new series. Thank you for this awesome guide! I am such a novice when it comes to make up so this is super helpful!

    1. Thanks Helen! I could talk about makeup all day long so I’m excited to hear what topics everyone is interested in. 🙂

  19. I’m so excited about your Ask Cara series, I submitted a question!! Always need help with brushes so this was awesome! Have a great day!
