6 Tips on How to Organize Makeup
How to Organize Makeup Tip #1: Sort, Toss, & Categorize
The first and most important step in organizing your makeup is sorting through it all. First things first, you’re gonna want to gather up ALL your makeup so you can go through it and sort into a keep, toss, or give away pile.
- If it’s expired or outdated, then toss it. Check out my makeup expiration guide over here for helpful tips on that.
- If it’s new/unused and you no longer want it, then give it to a friend or donate it to a local women’s shelter.
- If it’s something you love and use, then obviously it goes to the keep pile.
Once you have sorted out all the items and have your keep pile ready to go, it’s time to categorize. I recommend categorizing by product type such as eye products, face products etc. and then if you have the space for it you can create sub-categories. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Powders (Blushes, Bronzers, Setting Powders)
- Eyeshadow Palettes
- Lipsticks/Lip products
- Makeup Brushes
- Makeup Tools (sponges, lash curler, brow pencil, lip liner, etc.)
How to Organize Makeup Tip #2: Separate Out Daily Use Items
In addition to organizing makeup into specific categories, I also recommend separating out daily use items and putting those somewhere that is easily accessible. Having your favorite makeup items in a separate area is always extremely convenient for when you are in a hurry to get ready and you don’t want to have to dig through your entire makeup collection.
I personally have a daily makeup routine bag since I sometimes have to get ready in another room when my husband is on night shift. Having a daily use stash also makes it easy for traveling as you can just toss those makeup items into a bag and go.
How to Organize Makeup Tip #3: Store Makeup in Drawers Using Bins/Baskets
Now that you have all your makeup categorized by product type, it’s time to get them organized using drawers, bins, and baskets. Storing makeup in drawers is not only useful if you’re tight on counter space, but it also helps your makeup last longer when it is stored out of direct sunlight. Bins and baskets also make it super easy to keep things organized.
The best part is you don’t have to spend a fortune and you can find inexpensive bins/baskets at places like Dollar Tree, Walmart, and of course on Amazon. I was able to fit three of these small, white baskets into a drawer and they are the perfect size to organize my concealers, primers, and mascaras.
I also love these large woven white baskets for organizing small eyeshadow palettes, eyeshadow pans, and other small eye products.
How to Organize Makeup Tip #4: Use Clear Makeup Organizers to Save Space
If you’re tight on space, I definitely recommend taking advantage of clear, makeup organizers and stackable containers to store makeup items. I actually created an entire post on the 15 Best Makeup Organizers on Amazon, in case you’ve been on the hunt for some amazing, affordable options.
How to Organize Makeup Tip #5: Store Makeup So You Can See Easily See Shades/Names
One of my favorite tips on how to organize makeup is to store it so you can easily see the products and shade names. Nobody wants to spend hours digging around in a drawer to find a lipstick or an eyeshadow shade, so do yourself a favor and store them with the shades name side up.
Instead of stacking them on top of one another, it’s also helpful to store products like eyeshadow palettes on their side, so you can easily find the one you’re looking for. Using this organizational technique also helps save space.
How to Organize Makeup Tip #6: Organize Your Makeup Brushes with Cute Coffee Mugs
Last but not least, one of my favorite ways to store makeup brushes is upright in cute coffee mugs. Storing makeup brushes upright will help them last longer and it also looks so cute on a vanity. Check out these adorable coffee mugs perfect for storing your makeup brushes.
I recommend sorting your makeup brushes out into two categories including face brushes and eyeshadow brushes. This method is SO much easier than just throwing them all into a bin and having to dig around to find the one you’re looking for. Just make sure you remember to clean your makeup brushes regularly using my simple guide over here.
