Why is Prayer Important?
No matter what season of life you are in, daily prayer is absolutely vital for having a strong relationship with God.
Just as you wouldn’t go for long periods without speaking to your spouse and expect to have a strong marriage, the same holds true in our walk with Christ.
And despite what you may or may not have been taught about prayer, praying doesn’t have to be overly complicated, and our prayers don’t have to be lengthy sermons that only a theologian can understand.
That’s why I love The Lord’s Prayer so much – because it’s an easy to understand guide directly from Jesus himself on how we should pray.
Below I’ve broken it down even further on what The Lord Prayer is, what it teaches us about prayer, and how we can apply it to our daily prayer life.

What is the Lord’s Prayer?
The Lord’s Prayer is a bible passage that can be found and read in (Matthew 6:10-13) and is from Jesus’ longest and most detailed sermon.
More specifically, The Lord’s Prayer is the prayer that Jesus recited to the people when his disciples asked the question “How should we pray?”
In this passage, Jesus provides specific guidance on how to pray, and in the previous verses of Matthew 6:5-8 tells us how not to pray.
As it is a direct teaching from Jesus, it is one of the most popular and encouraging passages of scripture in the bible.
What does the Lord’s Prayer teach us about prayer?
Although the Lord’s Prayer might be short in length we can learn so much in this teaching from Jesus.
Below I’ve shared 4 important lessons we can learn from The Lord’s Prayer.
1. It’s about personal relationship with God
The Lord’s Prayer not only teaches us the format on how we should pray, but it also encourages us to grow a deeper, personal relationship with God through daily, intimate conversation.
2. It’s a model for what we should pray about
While The Lord’s Prayer can certainly be read and prayed from directly, Jesus intended it to be used as a model and guide for both how we should pray and what we should pray to God about.
3. Keep it simple
In an essence, Jesus reminds us to keep our prayers simple and to never pray from a place of trying to impress others.
Our prayers don’t have to be lengthy or complicated, we can talk to God just as we would a friend.
4. Pray with praise + trust
Lastly, he calls us to pray with gratitude and praise, and to posture our hearts with a full dependence on God.
When we pray, we should first and foremost always give God all the glory and praise.
Second, instead of praying for selfish wants and desires, we’re reminded to re-center our hearts to trust God’s perfect will over our lives and his creation.
To remember that he is above all and that if we seek first his kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33), he will graciously provide us with everything we ever need.
Pray with The Lord’s Prayer as Guidance
Matthew 6:10-13 says:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
