Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Oatmeal Muffins
As I mentioned above, these Banana Oatmeal Muffins aren’t like your typical muffins and unlike bread-type muffins, the texture of these muffins is very similar to soft baked oatmeal. They’re so delicious for breakfast or a healthy afternoon snack and both kids and adults will love them!
Aside from the fact that they’re so easy to whip together, one of my favorite things about these banana oatmeal muffins is you can switch up the ingredients according to your diet and flavor preferences.
I also really love switching up the toppings on these muffins and some of our favorites other than mini chocolate chips include nuts, dried fruit, or even leaving them plain and adding a spread of peanut butter or almond butter on top after they’ve baked.
No matter which way you make them, they’re SO delicious!

Recommended Ingredients
Below, I’ve included the recommended ingredients with helpful substitutions as well. This banana oatmeal muffin recipe is a great base recipe, so feel free to play around with the ingredients and make them to fit your family’s taste and dietary preferences!
- Oats: To get the best texture and health benefits, I recommend using rolled or old-fashioned oats.
- Bananas: The riper the bananas the better! I ended up using two large bananas, but measure it out to make sure you use a full cup’s worth.
- Eggs: Acts as the binder in the recipe.
- Salt & Baking Soda: Leavening ingredients to make them rise
- Milk: You can use almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk, or regular milk.
- Honey: I love the flavor that honey adds to muffins, but you could also use maple syrup if you prefer.
- Light Brown Sugar: This adds a nice richness to the muffins. You can also sub maple syrup.
- Cinnamon: Adds the perfect touch of spice to these muffins, without being over the top.
- Vanilla Extract: Adds a ton of flavor and really enhances the bananas.
- Oil: I recommend extra light olive oil. Alternatively you can use canola or vegetable oil.
- Chocolate Chips: I love using mini semi-sweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips. Since we’re adding them on top instead of in the batter, you can better control how much or how little you want.
- Optional Toppings: If you don’t want to make all your muffins with chocolate chips, you can add chopped nuts, dried fruit, or leave the muffins plain. These muffins are wonderful with some peanut butter or almond butter on top!
