Easy Halloween Brownies FAQs
What kind of brownie mix should I use?
For these brownies, I’d recommend using a fudgy or chewy brownie mix for best results.
Since you are going to be cutting and decorating your Halloween brownies, you don’t want to make cake-like brownies since those are delicate and prone for crumbling.
Our favorites are:
- Fudge Betty Crocker Brownie Mix
- Chewy Fudge Duncan Hines Brownie Mix
- Chocolate Supreme Ghirardelli Brownie Mix
Prefer homemade? Make this with my Best Fudge Cocoa Brownie Recipe. They are THE BEST fudgy brownies ever!
What makes a brownie moist?
One way to instantly make your brownies more moist, and a trick I always use when making brownies is to use milk instead of water.
This simple switch will make your brownies gooey and fudge-like.
Another option is to use only egg yolks in your brownies which increases the fat content, making them fudgier.
Check out this post for more tips on how to make the best brownies.
What makes brownies fudgy vs cakey?
For perfectly fudgy brownies, there are two key elements:
Don’t overmix your brownies, and don’t overbake them.
For fudgy brownies, stir until just combined, as opposed to whipping until light and fluffy for cake-like brownies.
It’s also important to check your brownies at the lowest recommended time and remove when the brownies are still ever so slightly gooey in the middle.
The brownies will continue to cook while they cool, resulting in a delicious fudge-like brownie.
How do I cut brownies into even squares?
If you have one, use a basic ruler and lightly score your brownies to go back and cut later.
I know this seems nerdy, but it actually helps make things easier in ensuring all the squares are evenly spaced.
For this particular recipe, I did cut one row slightly longer (as shown in the photo) since those were going to be “mummy” brownies.
How to decorate Halloween brownies?
There are SO many ways you can decorate Halloween brownies, but for today’s post I’m showing you how to create bat brownies, mummy brownies, and monster brownies using melted chocolate, frosting, sprinkles, candy eyes, and cookies.
You can also easily switch up the look of your Halloween brownies using different food colorings and by adding other fun Halloween-themed candies or decorations.
Below I’ve included some fun variations you might also want to try!
Variations:
- Add in regular chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, or flavored chocolate chips
- Add candy corn or bright colored sprinkles on top for a Fall theme
- Add Halloween themed PEEPS on top for a fun and sweet touch.
- Color the icing green and make “Frankenmummies” instead
- Color the icing orange, use pumpkin cookie cutters, and make classic Jack o’ Lanterns. You can even use chocolate chips for the eyes and mouth.
How do I make Halloween brownies for a crowd?
This recipe uses a regular sized brownie mix, but if you’re making Halloween brownies for a lot of people, you can use a family-size brownie mix instead.
Or, make my Homemade Fudgy Cocoa Brownies which are THE BEST and makes enough for a 9×13 baking pan.
How do I store Halloween brownies?
Leftover Halloween brownies should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-5 days.
Halloween Brownies Tips
Line Pan with Parchment Paper
Parchment paper is one of my top essential baking tools.
This makes it easier to remove the brownies from the pan to cut, and will make for less mess when decorating.
I recommend to put enough overhang of parchment paper in the pan so that you can simply lift them out using the excess paper.
Let Your Brownies Fully Cool Before Decorating/Cutting
Although it can be tempting if you’re in a hurry, I 110% recommend planning ahead so that you have plenty of time for your brownies to fully cool.
I like to use a wire cooling rack to speed things up.
If you try to cut them while they’re still warm, the batter will stick to your knife and tear, creating a huge mess.
You also want to avoid decorating while the brownies are warm, since this can cause frosting or decorating elements to melt.
Let them cool completely to the touch, then you can cut and decorate.
Use a Non-Stick or Plastic Knife for Cutting
Another tip to ensure your freshly baked brownies don’t mess up when you cut them is to use a non-stick knife or plastic knife for easy, mess-free cutting.
If you don’t have either of those on hand, you can use a long paring knife dipping it in warm water and wiping it off with a paper towel in between slices for cleaner cuts.
