How to Make Homemade Cinnamon Roll Cookies

Ingredients Needed:
Recommended Kitchen Tools:

The most time consuming step of this recipe is rolling out your dough, filling it, and slicing your cookies, but it’s NOT hard. Below, I’ve included photos of each step to give you a general idea of what it should look like.

When rolling out your chilled sugar cookie dough, I recommend using a rolling pin and a cutting board or flat surface lined with parchment paper.

You want to roll your dough out 1/4 inch thick and to be about 15″ x 4″ in size.

Next, spread the softened butter on your dough and sprinkle liberally with your brown sugar cinnamon mixture.

Next, roll your dough up slowly and tightly. Smooth out any cracks in your dough as you go to avoid the filling seeping out.

After you’ve rolled your dough up, I recommend placing back in the fridge for 10-15 minutes to make it easier to slice.

Next, slice your cookies evenly, place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, and bake in the oven for 9-11 minutes.

Below, you will see what the cookies look like after they’ve baked and cooled.

I wanted to show you this, because while they’re not much lookers by themselves, they turn into gorgeous show stoppers once they have the cream cheese drizzle added!

Tips for Making the Best Cinnamon Roll Cookies

To ensure your cinnamon roll cookies turn out amazing, follow my simple tips and recommendations below in making your homemade cinnamon roll cookies.

Soften Cream Cheese & Butter at Room Temperature

Most people think you need to set cream cheese or butter out a long time ahead, but you really only need to set it out about 45 minutes before you need to use it. I recommend cubing the butter on a plate and taking the cream cheese out of the box, and both will soften in no time!

Chill Your Cookie Dough

The cookie dough in this recipe is very soft. To make it easier to work with and roll up, you need to chill it in the refrigerator for a minimum of 1 hour. This will also help ensure your cookies stay in good form when baking them.

Roll The Dough Tight + Slice Evenly

When it comes to rolling up your cinnamon roll cookies, roll slowly and tightly and try to avoid cracks in the dough. You might have a few appear as you roll, but try your best to smooth it out and keep rolling.

I also recommend slicing your cookies as evenly as possible.

Use a Bag to Pipe on Glaze

A simple and pretty way to add the cream cheese glaze icing on these cookies is by using a cake icing bag and piping tip or a ziploc bag that has had a tiny corner snipped off.

I did zig zags at an angle on mine and they turned out so pretty! If you don’t want to pipe on your glaze, alternatively you could dip the tops of the cookie, but I think the drizzle is the prettiest! ๐Ÿ™‚

Storing Cinnamon Roll Cookies

These cinnamon roll cookies taste just as great the next day after you make them. To store, place in an airtight container and refrigerate. When ready to eat, heat in the microwave for 15-30 seconds, and they will taste like ooey gooey, soft, delicious cinnamon rolls that just came out of the oven.

Can I Make Cinnamon Roll Cookies Ahead of Time?

Yes! If you would like to make ahead for a party or gathering, make your cookies as directed and bake fully. Once cooled, place the unglazed cookies in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 7 days or freeze for up to 1 month.

Can I Freeze Cinnamon Roll Dough?

Yes! Prepare your dough log with the cinnamon brown sugar filling, but don’t slice your cookies. Instead, wrap it tightly with plastic wrap and place in an airtight container or freezer safe bag and freeze for up to 1 month. Once you are ready to bake it, place in the refrigerator the night before to thaw and then slice and bake. Easy peasy!

Cookie Recipe

Cinnamon Sugar Filling

Cream Cheese Glaze

Instructions

Cookie Recipe

  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar until creamy. Add in baking powder, salt, and flour half cup at a time and mix until the dough is smooth and soft.
  • Flatten the cookie dough into a disk, wrap tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for a minimum of 1 hour.

Filling

  • For the cinnamon roll filling, combine brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
  • Separate the chilled dough into two equal halves and roll each disk out 1/4 inch thick and about 15″ x 4″ in length and width (although it doesn’t have to be perfect).
  • Spread 2 tablespoons of softened butter on each dough log and sprinkle with 1/2 of the brown sugar cinnamon mixture, gently pressing it into the dough.
  • Beginning with one long edge, roll the dough into a tight log slowly, being careful to avoid cracks in the dough. If that happens, smooth it out and continue rolling tightly.
  • Next, use a sharp knife or pizza cutter and slice the dough into 1 inch pieces (about 15 cookies per log).
  • Place cinnamon roll cookies 2 inches apart on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 9-11 minutes. Your cookies will still be pale in color, but they will continue cooking on the baking sheet while cooling.

Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely before glazing.

Cream Cheese Glaze:

  • Combine the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar in a bowl with an electric mixer until thick and smooth.
  • Add the vanilla and milk until the glaze is a drizzle consistency.
  • Use a piping bag to drizzle lines on each cookie.

Notes

  • Store leftover cookies in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
