8 Tips For Making The Best M&M Cookies
Before diving into baking these M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies, I recommend reading my list of helpful tips below.
I’ve been baking cookies for many years now and through a lot of trial and error I’ve found these steps help ensure your M&M cookies will turn out amazing every time.
You’ll also be able to brag to everyone about how you make the BEST M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies. 😉
1. Use Real Butter
For the best cookies, use real butter, not margarine.
I prefer using unsalted butter in these cookies, but you can also use salted butter if you prefer to balance out the sweetness of the cookie a bit more.
2. Use Softened, Not Melted Butter
You want to avoid using melted or overly soft butter in these cookies, as this will result in your cookies spreading too thin and flat.
I recommend setting your butter out at room temperature 1-2 hours before baking cookies.
Tip: If you forget to set out butter ahead of time, many microwaves now have a butter softening setting that you can use, just make sure you don’t overheat it to the point of melting.
3. Chill Your Dough
I strongly recommend chilling your dough a minimum of 1 hour for the best, soft, and chewy chocolate chip M&M cookies.
Chilling your cookie dough will help your cookies maintain their shape when baking and will help prevent the cookies from spreading out too flat in the oven
4. Line Your Pans
Line your cookie sheets with parchment paper or my new favorite non-stick baking mat to ensure you cookies bake to perfection. This also makes for easy clean-up and ensures your cookies don’t stick to the pan.
5. Use a Cookie Scoop
Use a cookie scoop for perfectly uniform cookies. It’s also MUCH quicker than scooping cookie dough out by hand with a spoon.
We usually use a medium cookie scoop for larger cookies, but you can also use the small scoop for more cookies to go around.
6. Add M&M’s on Top
If you want to make your M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies extra pretty, add extra M&M’s on top of your cookie before baking.
You can add as many or as little as you like, and they will spread out when baked.
7. Don’t Overbake
When baked correctly, these M&M cookies have a perfect soft and chewy texture, but you want to make sure you don’t over bake them.
Bake until the edges are a light golden brown and the top has set. The centers might still look slightly soft, but they will continue to bake on the hot pan. (See tip below)
8. Let Cool on Pan for 2 Minutes
Allow the cookies to set on the hot pan for 2 minutes before moving them to a cooling rack to cool completely. This helps the centers finish baking to perfection.
Once fully cooled, store in an airtight container to maintain freshness and texture.
M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies FAQ’s
What’s The Best Method for Measuring Flour for Cookies?
One of the most important steps in making cookies is of course adding in your flour.
Too much flour can create overly cakey, flour-y cookies, while too little flour can create thin and flat cookies.
We want the perfect in-between with our M&M cookies with a perfectly soft and chewy texture and crispy, lightly golden edges.
To measure your flour, I recommend first stirring your flour around, and then spooning the flour into your measuring cup.
Next, level your flour using the back of a knife or a leveler to remove any excess.
Do I Have to Chill M&M Cookie Dough?
Yes, although it’s tempting to bake right away, I strongly recommend chilling your dough a minimum of 1 hour for the best, soft, and chewy chocolate chip M&M cookies.
Chilling your cookie dough will help your cookies maintain their shape when baking and will help prevent the cookies from spreading out flat in the oven.
How to Store M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies
Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
Can You Freeze M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies?
Yes, you can freeze M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies either unbaked or baked.
How to Freeze M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies:
To freeze baked M&M Cookies, allow the cookies to first cool completely and then place in a freezer safe container or freezer safe bag.
Freeze for up to 3 months, and when ready to eat, thaw in the fridge overnight and re-heat in microwave if desired, or microwave individual servings from frozen for 30 seconds – 1 minute until warm.
To freeze unbaked M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies, scoop the cookie dough into balls and place them on a baking sheet or plate (like in the photo below)
Loosely cover with plastic wrap and place in the freezer for 1 hour.
Once dough has hardened, transfer cookie dough to a freezer safe bag or container and store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Once ready to bake, bake as directed, adding an additional 1-2 minutes baking time if needed.
Can You Make M&M Cookies Ahead?
Yes, you can prepare this M&M chocolate chip cookie dough up to 5 days in advance and store in the fridge until ready to bake.

M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies
Check out my Best M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe and Video for soft, chewy, and delicious cookies! These Easy M&M Cookies have crispy edges, a soft and chewy center, and are loaded with colorful M&Ms and delicious chocolate chips.
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Chill Time: 1 hour
- Cook Time: 10 minutes
- Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
- Yield: 30-45 cookies, depending on size 1x
- Category: Dessert
- Method: Oven, Baking
- Cuisine: American
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 2 cups self-rising flour
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup M&Ms, plus more for top if desired
- In a large mixing bowl, use an electric hand mixer to cream the butter until smooth.
- Next, add in sugar and brown sugar and mix with electric mixer for about 1 minute, until creamy. Add egg and vanilla extract and mix for about 30 seconds until incorporated.
- Next, slowly add in self-rising flour 1/2 cup at a time and mix with electric mixer until just combined.
- Lastly, gently fold in chocolate chips and M&M’s by hand using a non-stick spatula. Stir until evenly incorporated.
- Cover and place cookie dough in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to chill.
- Once dough has chilled, remove from the fridge and use a small or medium cookie scoop or hands to shape into balls.
- Line large cookie sheets with parchment paper and place cookie dough balls evenly spaced apart on your cookie sheet, allowing enough room in between for the cookies to spread.
- If you prefer a flatter, chewier cookie, slightly flatten the tops of each ball with the bottom of a glass. If you prefer a softer, more cake-like cookie, do not flatten.
- If desired, add a few extra M&M’s on top of each of your cookie dough balls. You can do this either before or immediately after baking.
- Place in a 375 degree preheated oven and bake for 8-12 minutes or until the sides and bottom are a light golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.
- Store leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
Butter – Make sure your butter is softened to room temperature but not overly soft or melted. I usually set mine out a couple hours before I want to make my cookies. I personally use unsalted butter for these cookies but you can use salted if you prefer.
How Long to Chill Dough – I recommend chilling your cookie dough for at least 1 hour in the refrigerator prior to baking. This helps ensure your cookies won’t spread out too thin and will help achieve a more soft, chewy texture. You can also make ahead the night before and chill overnight for baking the next day.
How to Store Cookies – Once fully cooled, store leftover chocolate chip cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
How to Freeze Dough – Cookie dough can be frozen for up to 3 months. I recommend shaping into balls and placing in a freezer safe bag that way you can easily bake them from frozen. Once ready to eat, remove from freezer, and bake as directed, adding an additional 1-2 minutes baking time if needed.
