My original chocolate chip cookies are hands down one of my favorite desserts of all time, but recently these double chocolate chip cookies have grown to be another favorite of mine.

These ultimate chocolate chocolate chip cookies are perfectly soft, fudgy, and chewy with a decadent and delicious chocolate flavor.

What are double chocolate chip cookies?

In case you’re wondering, double chocolate chip cookies are a dark chocolate cookie with semi sweet chocolate chips.

If you ask me, it’s the perfect flavor duo and makes for one incredibly delicious cookie.

What is the difference between regular chocolate chip cookies and double chocolate chip cookies?

The main difference between chocolate chocolate chip cookies and regular chocolate chip cookies is the base cookie dough batter.

Double chocolate chip cookies feature a dark chocolate cookie dough while also having semi sweet chocolate chips in them, hence the double chocolate cookie name.

Tips for the Ultimate Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies

Tip #1 – Use good quality chocolate/chocolate chips

Since this chocolate chocolate chip cookies are so chocolate forward, it’s important to use quality ingredients.

I tend to use Nestle Toll House for semi sweet chocolate chips and Ghirardelli for the dark chocolate chips.

Tip #2 – Chill your dough

For the best flavor and texture, I recommend chilling your dough overnight.

Allowing your dough to chill overnight will really help all the flavors come out more and will help create the perfect soft, fudgy, and thick cookies.

If you’re in a rush you can make them after an hour of chill time, but I strongly recommend waiting until the next day if you can.

Tip #3 – Use a medium cookie scoop

A medium cookie scoop really gives you the perfect cookie.

I’ve tried making these cookies into a smaller size and even as really large cookies, and while they still taste good, the medium size gives you the best texture and shape overall.

Bonus Cookie Tip: Weigh Your Flour

One of the easiest ways to ruin a great cookie is by adding too much or too little flour.

Too much flour = dry, tough, crumbly cookies, while too little flour = flat cookies.

The solution? Use this awesome scale and weigh your flour.

It’s truly the most fool-proof method to ensure you are adding the correct amount, and has made all the difference in my homemade cookies.

Don’t have a scale yet?

DON’T just scoop your measuring cup into the flour and add it into your dough. This almost always will result in adding too much flour.

I recommend grabbing this affordable scale for the future, but until you get one here’s the best way to measure your flour without a scale.

Use a spoon to fluff the self-rising flour in your container or bag, then use the spoon to add flour into your measuring cup before using a knife to scrape off the excess.

Double Chocolate Chip Cookies FAQ’s

Can you use self rising flour for double chocolate chip cookies?

Yes! Self rising flour is a simple pre-mixed flour made with all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder, and is my go-to flour for all of my favorite cookies.

Here’s a few of my most popular self-rising flour cookie recipes:

Self rising flour is also amazing for making my easy 3 Ingredient Biscuits and 2 Ingredient Pizza Dough.

Why did my chocolate chip cookies come out flat?

If your cookies turned out flat and spread too thin when baked, it’s likely due to not chilling your cookie dough long enough.

With this cookie recipe, I recommend chilling your cookie dough a minimum of 1 hour to overnight before baking.

With cookies, it’s also important to not use overly softened butter in your batter, and I recommend using softened butter that’s around 68-70 degrees.

Double Chocolate Chip Cookies Storage & Freezer Instructions

How do you store baked chocolate chocolate chip cookies?

Leftover double chocolate chip cookies should be stored at room temperature in an air tight container. They will remain fresh for up to 1 week.

Can you freeze double chocolate chip cookies?

Yes, you can freeze double chocolate chip cookies after baking them or freeze the unbaked dough rolled into balls.

Both are delicious, and it’s a simple way to enjoy chocolate chocolate chip cookies whenever the craving strikes.

See both instructions below.

How to Freeze Double Chocolate Chip Cookies with Self Rising Flour:

It’s super easy to freeze unbaked double chocolate chip cookie dough or baked chocolate chocolate chip cookies, and both can be frozen for up to 3 months when stored properly.

To Freeze (unbaked cookie dough):

Use a cookie scoop to scoop out the dough into balls and place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

Place in the freezer or fridge (if space doesn’t allow in your freezer) and let the cookies chill for 1 hour or more.

Once the cookies have chilled enough to maintain their shape, place the cookie dough balls in a freezer safe bag or freezer safe container.

If layering the cookies, place a piece of parchment paper between layers to ensure they don’t stick together.

How To Bake from Frozen:

Over the years I’ve found frozen cookie dough bakes best when you let the cookies thaw at room temperature for 30 minutes or so before baking.

You can also place the cookie dough in the fridge to thaw out overnight.

Bake the cookies as directed in the recipe card, and add an extra minute or two of baking time if needed.

To Freeze (baked cookies):

Prepare and bake double chocolate chip cookies as directed.

Once baked, allow cookies to completely cool and place in a freezer safe Ziploc bag or container for up to 3 months.

Once ready to eat, simply heat the cookies in the microwave for 30 seconds – 1 minute or until warm.

Kitchen Tools Needed:

Step 1: Melt Chocolate, Make Your Cookie Dough, + Chill

The first step in making these double chocolate chip cookies is to melt your dark chocolate chips.

I prefer to melt mine in the microwave since it’s quick and easy, and once melted you will want to set it aside to cool for 5 minutes or so.

While letting your melted dark chocolate cool, you can begin preparing your double chocolate chip cookie dough.

Using an an electric hand mixer will make this process quick and easy.

Make sure you check out my recipe card for detailed instructions.

Once the cookie dough is formed, cover and chill your chocolate chocolate chip cookie dough in the fridge for a minimum of 1 hour or overnight.

I’ve found the longer the cookie dough chills, the more intense the chocolate flavor becomes.

Step 2: Scoop Your Cookie Dough + Add Extra Chocolate Chips On Top

After your double chocolate chip cookie dough has chilled, use a medium cookie scoop and scoop out even amount sized balls onto a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.

I usually put 5 cookies to a sheet so that the cookies have plenty of space.

The next step is of course optional, but if you want to make these the ultimate chocolate chocolate chip cookies, then add a few semi-sweet chocolate chips and dark chocolate chips on top of each cookie dough ball.

This not only makes your cookies look prettier, but of course adds more yummy chocolate flavor!

*As always, you might have to adjust times according to your oven.
Let the cookies cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire cooling rack.
Serve and enjoy!
