Self Rising Flour Biscuit Recipes FAQ’s
Not familiar with self rising flour? Check out my guide on self rising flour here and my helpful FAQ’s below.
What Is Self-Rising Flour?
Self-rising flour is just as the name says, it’s self-rising with a leavening agent and salt already pre-mixed in it.
Can you make biscuits with self-rising flour? (Can I use self-raising flour for biscuits instead of plain?)
Yes! self-rising flour is an easy choice for making homemade biscuits from scratch because it’s made with a pre-mixed blend of both hard and soft wheat and leavening ingredients to include baking powder and salt.
Every cup of self rising flour has 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
Does Self Rising Flour Make Better Biscuits?
While biscuits can be made with self rising flour or all purpose flour, I personally always use and recommend self rising flour biscuits for the softest, fluffiest biscuits.
Although self-rising flour is often discredited in the baking world, I’m a huge fan and I use it in all these delicious self rising flour recipes to include cookies, cakes, breads, doughs, and more.
And if you really want to compare things, all purpose flour contains a higher protein content than self rising flour, which makes them more dense in texture.
I don’t know about you but I like my biscuits SOFT and FLUFFY, so tender self rising flour biscuits always win in my book.
What happens if I use self-raising flour in biscuits?
You will end up with soft, fluffy, tender biscuits that taste delicious!
Just make sure your flour is as fresh as possible to ensure your biscuits rise properly, and don’t overmix your dough so that they turn out nice and tender.
Do I need baking soda if I use self-rising flour?
No, self rising flour already has a leavening agent (baking powder) in it.
Why are my self rising biscuits not rising?
If your self rising flour biscuits aren’t rising, it’s most likely due to your flour being expired.
Because this recipe uses self-rising flour and no additional leavening or rising agents, it’s crucial to use fresh flour.
Can I make my own self rising flour if I don’t have any?
Yes. If you don’t have any self rising flour on hand, you can make your own homemade self rising flour.
Self Rising Flour Biscuit Tips
Use fresh, good quality ingredients
This tip is one I always recommend with anything you’re baking, but make sure you’re using fresh, good quality ingredients.
Using fresh flour, milk/buttermilk, and butter not only ensures your biscuits will taste delicious, but with self rising flour it’s extremely important to ensure your biscuits rise properly.
As a general rule of thumb, self rising flour should be used within 4-6 months of opening it and stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
My absolute favorite self rising flour brand is White Lily and I personally like to use whole fat buttermilk or whole milk when making biscuits for the best flavor.
Also, ALWAYS use REAL butter, not margarine, when making biscuits.
Don’t overmix the biscuit dough
Being easy on your dough and not overmixing is a key element to making soft, fluffy biscuits.
Mix until just combined, and it’s okay if your dough looks lumpy.
Not to get all scientific on you, but over-mixing creates gluten which makes your biscuits/breads tough and dense.
We want our biscuits nice and fluffy and tender so mix until JUST combined.
Use cold ingredients/tools
Another key to soft, fluffy biscuits is keeping your butter, milk, and/or buttermilk as cold as possible.
In fact, one of my favorite biscuit-making tricks is freezing my butter and grating it with a box grater into my flour.
Not only does this help ensure the butter is evenly distributed in the dough, but I find it less messy and time-consuming than cutting in the butter manually.
It’s also really helpful to place your baking tools and mixing bowl in the fridge or freezer before making your biscuits to help keep everything nice and cold.

I always recommend storing leftover biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature.
This helps your biscuits remain fresher longer and prevents them from drying out.
Can You Freeze Biscuits?
Yes! You can freeze biscuits baked or unbaked for up to 3 months.
I like to use freezer safe bags and freeze my biscuits in single layers with parchment paper in between to prevent sticking.
